Tech Talk: What The Heck Are Pixels?

Howdy, welcome to Tech Talk. If you are joining us for the first time, this section of the blog was created to teach about the tech jargon that have become part of our lives. A lot don’t really understand these things and how they came to be. Yes, this is our attempt to make plain more of this techy stuff.

We will be considering what the meaning of pixels is camera classified cation.

Pixels, And Your Camera’s Strength
Recently I was reading about the Specs of the new installment in the Infinix Hot Series, the HOT Seven. I was looking for a phone that could boost of about 3GB of RAM and 32GB ROM. And of course battery to sustain for a day or two and still doesn’t cause a gully in my shallow pocket.

The infinix 7 was a good phone but what discouraged me from buying it was it had two 13 MPs camera (Both Front and Selfie Camera). Not good enough if you are a Selfie lover like my girlfriend!

The Infinix HOT S4 on the other hand, boosted all the Specs on HOT 7 but dual 32MPs camera, Wow.

That get me thinking, what is really the meaning of MP and how does it relate to the power of your camera? An average Nigerian knows that the higher the number of the camera’s MP the better the camera in focus, picture, video quality and user experience.

MP is an acronym which means mega pixels. This means one million pixels. A pixel on the other hand is a unit of illumination in a display screen. The word “pixel” is a coinage from “picture element”. It is a combination of these many pixels that becomes an image. The pixels are arranged like pieces of puzzle or mosaics. The more the pixels, the smoother and more pleasing to the eye the image looks.

So on a typical 32 MP camera, there are approximately 32,000,000 pixels in every inch of screen. Sweet.

Pixels and Picture Size
Since pictures come in either landscape or portraits, they can be considered as rectangles. Considering the length and width and the amount of pixels that the camera used to take the picture has, we can calculate the dimensions of this picture.

For a picture taken by a 1MP camera, the image is usually 1024 X 1024. (Do the math 1024 X 1024 is equals to 1,048,576. See?)

Now what of a picture from a 8MP camera? This most of the time come in sizes of 3264 x 2448. If you care to do the math you will see that it’s the same.

Pixels And Video Quality
The higher your MP, the better you video quality. But there is a drag somewhere. Since videos are not just still pictures, the camera with which you shot does the video as well as your display system is going t I affect the final quality.

If you are shooting a 4K video (4K videos can be produced by cameras of about 8MP and above) and decided to view them using a 1080p monitor (about 2.1Mp) you will be losing a whopping 5.9MP in resolution. That means if you want a 8MP video of your neighbor eating noodles, you have got to get a 8MP monitor or screen system.

But Wait!
Yes, I have been telling you there is a direct correlation between a camera’s pixels and picture and video quality. That’s true but this relationship is not always true. There are other contributing factors such as ISO factor as camera sensor, quality of your lens, colour depth and dots per inch (resolution) That means you can have a high resolution camera in your hands and still take amateurish pictures and videos.

What Of Underwater Shots?
Pixels is also needed in underwater photography. So if you are going after those fishes or you just want to take a shot of your own hmm hmm under water, go ahead with a high MP camera for beautiful pictures.

What is the Mega Pixel Of The Human Eye?
The first question is to ask, does the eye even have a value of a megapixel? The answer is yes. The technology with which the human eye operates is the one mimicked in creating a camera and since the first breakthrough, it has been advanced so much.

The eye like a camera uses a lens and a shutter and a background on which it projects the image you are seeing. From calculation, your eye has an approximately 576 MP, that’s pretty impressive. This is why you see this in extraordinary details in remarkable 3 dimension fashion. The eye can with the ease of Thanos’ Snap differentiate colour and depth and style and structure, texture and overlap. Why your eye is so precise it can see an ant walking along the wall in such jaw dropping details. There is more good news, you have two eyes giving you a combined 1152 MP, Wow. No camera can compete, yet.

And again the eye works more like a video stream camera than a still one.
Your eyes can also work in association focusing on the same image. This is called Binocular Vision. Your eyes picks up the images you are seeing and updates it per Pico seconds with your Brain. The brain “paints” the view picture by picture and remove the stoppages in seamless fashion. This is being copied for new phone cameras now. Sometimes a series of three cameras are arranged to focus on the same image. The human being is really an enigma of design.

Pixels In Large Screens
Pixels are usually small in large screens but because you are so far away this gap or fault is not always visible. Large screens will bend with your eyes and the images or videos destined to be on these screens should be on high resolution.
